Super Marmande – Solanum

Plant description
Super Marmande is a classic French beefsteak-type tomato, prized for its large, ribbed fruits and rich, traditional tomato flavour. Originating from the Marmande region in southwest France, this variety builds on the heritage Marmande line, selected for improved vigour, productivity, and fruit size while retaining the deeply lobed, slightly flattened shape that defines the type. It has long been a favourite among European growers and market gardeners for its combination of reliability and outstanding eating quality.
The plant is a vigorous indeterminate (cordon) variety, meaning it will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season when properly managed. Under greenhouse or polytunnel conditions, plants can easily reach 6–8 feet or more, producing trusses of large, heavily ribbed tomatoes that can weigh 200–400g or more each. The fruits ripen to a rich red and are known for their meaty texture, low seed content, and excellent balance of sweetness and acidity, making them ideal for slicing as well as cooking. With good care, Super Marmande is a heavy cropper and a dependable performer, producing high-quality fruit over an extended period.

Growing instructions
Start Super Marmande early by sowing seeds indoors from January to March, using warmth and strong light to produce sturdy seedlings. Pot on gradually into a nutrient-rich, free-draining compost, and consider adding perlite to improve structure and root development. As an indeterminate variety, it is best grown as a cordon (single stem), regularly removing side shoots to focus energy into fruit production. Once established in its final position, begin feeding with a high-quality tomato fertiliser after the first truss has set, and continue feeding regularly throughout the season. Grow in a large pot (minimum 15–20 litres) or directly in the ground, and provide strong vertical support using canes or strings, tying in the main stem as it grows. Keep plants in a warm, sunny, sheltered environment such as a greenhouse or polytunnel, water consistently to avoid fluctuations, and ensure good airflow to reduce the risk of disease and promote healthy growth.
Preserving & Recipe ideas
Super Marmande’s large, meaty fruits make it excellent for both fresh use and preserving. For storage, tomatoes can be frozen (whole or cooked down into sauce), though they are especially well suited to making rich passata, sauces, and soups due to their low water content and deep flavour. Roasting is another great way to concentrate their sweetness before freezing or storing. Bottling or canning as passata or chopped tomatoes is ideal for long-term use, while slow-cooked sauces can be portioned and frozen for convenience. In the kitchen, Super Marmande shines as a slicing tomato, perfect for salads, sandwiches, and caprese, where its flavour really stands out. It is equally at home in cooked dishes—pasta sauces, stews, and Mediterranean recipes—where its balance of sweetness and acidity creates depth and richness, making it a superb all-round tomato for both fresh eating and culinary use.
