A legendary superhot that lives up to its killer reputation with fruit measuring over 1 million SHU.  The distinctively-shaped fruit measure about 3.8cm in diameter and turn from green to red as they mature.  They are deeply ribbed and severely wrinkled, giving them and other-worldly appearance.  The tall, upright plants should be grown in the ground or pots 10 to 15 litres in volume and the plants will need some support.

This capsicum chinense is a chilli pepper native to the village of Moruga, Trinidad and Tobago.  In 2012, New Mexico State University’s Chile Pepper Institute, one of the global authorities on hot peppers, identified the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion as the hottest chili pepper at that time with a heat of 1.2 million Scoville Heat Units.  It is significant since this was one of the last times peer reviewed authentic and reliable science has been used to determine the hottest pepper on the planet.  Subsquent hottest ever testing has been conducted by private companies and individuals with commercial interest in the outcomes.  This lack of transparency has raised widespread doubt about the validity of many of the subsequent claims for the title.

One other important aspect of this story is that the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion should NOT be confused with the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T Pepper…which is a whole different beast.  🙂
