Jazz – Capsicum annuum

Plant description

The Chilli Pepper ‘Jazz’ F1 is a highly decorative, dwarf edible variety specifically designed for small-space gardening, such as windowsills or patio containers. It is best described by its vibrant, multi-coloured fruit and compact growth habit.

Heat level

Classified as medium-hot with a Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) rating of approximately 25,000, however these are small pods and we should expect some to be much hotter.

Growing instructions

Best Locations: Ideal for sunny windowsills, kitchen counters, or small patio pots.
Conditions: Thrives in well-drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position. It can be grown indoors year-round or moved outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.
Sowing: Best sown between January and April for a summer harvest.

Recipes

Drying Process: Place the ripe red chillies on a paper towel or moisture-absorbent tissue in a warm, dry spot like a windowsill. Turning them regularly helps prevent mould; they are ready when they feel brittle and “rattle” like scrunched-up tissue paper.
Storage: Once “crinkle-dry,” store them whole in airtight glass jars or tins in a cool, dark place to maintain their potency.
Preparation: Using a pestle and mortar allows you to customize the texture—from coarse flakes for a visual pop in pasta to a fine powder for seamless integration into smooth sauces and soups.

Extended Culinary Uses
Beyond standard stir-fries, these chillies are incredibly versatile:
Jalfrezi & Indian Curries: With a medium-hot rating (25,000 SHU), ‘Jazz’ chillies are an excellent substitute for Bird’s Eye chillies (which can reach 100,000 SHU) in dishes like Jalfrezi. While Bird’s Eye peppers provide an intense, sharp heat, using ‘Jazz’ allows you to add more pods for a richer pepper flavour without overwhelming the dish with spice.
Baking & Infusions: Their fruity undertones make them a surprising addition to dark chocolate desserts or spicy brownies. You can also drop whole dried pods into sterilized bottles of olive oil to create a homemade chilli oil.
Rehydration: For stews or marinades, you can soak the dried pods in hot water for 10 minutes to soften them, then blend them into a fresh-tasting chilli paste.
