Hot Joker – Capsicum annuum

Plant description
Hot Joker is a striking ornamental chilli variety that combines bold colour, compact growth, and a surprising level of heat, making it both decorative and practical. Like many ornamental types, it belongs to the Capsicum annuum species and has been bred for its visual impact as much as its productivity. While its precise breeding origin is less formally documented than some research institute varieties, it follows the same tradition of ornamental chillies developed for container growing and display, offering a vivid mix of colours and reliable performance.
The plant forms a compact, bushy habit, typically reaching around 1–2 feet in height, making it ideal for pots, patios, and windowsills. It produces clusters of small, upright pods that ripen through a dramatic sequence of colours—usually starting deep purple, then transitioning through cream or yellow, orange, and finally red, often all present on the plant at once. This creates a bold, eye-catching contrast against the green foliage. Despite its ornamental nature, Hot Joker carries a respectable heat level, generally in the moderate range (similar to cayenne types, around 30,000–50,000 SHU), with a clean, straightforward chilli flavour. It is a prolific producer, and with the right care, plants can become heavily laden with colourful fruits over a long season.

Growing instructions
Start Hot Joker early by sowing seeds indoors from January, using warmth and strong light to produce compact, healthy seedlings. Pot on gradually into a nutrient-rich, free-draining compost, ideally mixed with perlite to improve aeration and root development. Once established in the final pot, begin feeding with a tomato fertiliser after around two weeks and continue regularly throughout the growing season. Although this is a compact variety, aim for a 10–15 litre pot to maximise growth and fruiting potential. Plants generally maintain a tidy shape but may benefit from light support if heavily laden with fruit. Grow in a warm, sunny, sheltered position—indoors, on a patio, or in a greenhouse—water consistently without overwatering, and maintain good airflow to keep plants healthy and productive.
Preserving & Recipe Ideas
Hot Joker produces plenty of small chillies that lend themselves well to a variety of preserving methods. Drying is particularly effective—use a dehydrator or air fryer on dehydrate mode to create crisp pods that can be crushed into vibrant flakes or powder. Freezing whole or chopped chillies is a simple option, while pickling preserves both their flavour and striking colour. They can also be fermented into hot sauces or blended into chilli pastes for easy use throughout the year. In the kitchen, Hot Joker is best used where its moderate heat and colourful appearance can shine—ideal for garnishes, salsas, salads, and infused oils or vinegars. It can also be used much like a cayenne, adding a clean, approachable heat to sauces, stir-fries, and marinades, making it a versatile and visually appealing addition to any chilli grower’s harvest.
