Plant description

Fairy Lights is a delightful ornamental chilli variety grown for its compact habit and vibrant display of multicoloured fruits, making it a favourite for patios, windowsills, and decorative planting. While its exact breeding history is less formally documented than some university-developed varieties, it belongs to the Capsicum annuum species and has been selected specifically for its ornamental appeal—producing masses of small, upright peppers that resemble tiny glowing bulbs, hence the name “Fairy Lights.” It shares similarities with other ornamental chillies in that it combines visual impact with practical edibility, offering both beauty and utility.

The plant itself forms a neat, bushy structure, typically reaching around 1–2 feet in height, making it ideal for container growing. It produces an abundance of small, conical pods that stand upright above the foliage, ripening through a striking range of colours—usually purple, cream, yellow, orange, and red, often all present at once. This creates a bright, festive appearance that lasts for weeks. Despite its ornamental nature, Fairy Lights chillies carry a respectable level of heat, generally in the moderate range (similar to cayenne types), with a simple, clean flavour. While not as complex as culinary-focused varieties, they are perfectly usable in the kitchen and valued for their versatility as well as their visual appeal.

Heat level

5/10: Scoville rating is approximately 40,000-60,000.

Growing instructions

Start Fairy Lights early by sowing seeds indoors from January, using warmth and good light to produce strong, compact seedlings. Pot on gradually into a nutrient-rich, free-draining compost, ideally improved with perlite to support healthy root development. Once established in the final pot, begin feeding with a tomato fertiliser after around two weeks and continue regularly throughout the growing season. Although naturally compact, aim for a 10–15 litre pot to maximise plant size and fruit production. Plants generally hold their shape well but may benefit from light support if heavily laden with fruit. Grow in a warm, sunny, sheltered position—indoors, on a patio, or in a greenhouse—water consistently without overwatering, and maintain good airflow to keep plants healthy and productive.

Preserving & Recipe Ideas

Fairy Lights produces an abundance of small chillies that are easy to preserve, with drying being one of the most effective methods—use a dehydrator or air fryer on dehydrate mode to create crisp pods that can be crushed into colourful flakes or powder. Freezing whole or chopped chillies is a simple alternative, while pickling is particularly popular, preserving both their flavour and their striking appearance in jars. They can also be fermented into hot sauces or blended into chilli pastes for convenient use. In the kitchen, Fairy Lights chillies are best used where their moderate heat and vibrant colours can shine—ideal for salsas, garnishes, salads, and infused oils or vinegars. They can also be used much like cayenne in everyday cooking, adding a clean, approachable heat to sauces, stir-fries, and marinades, making them a practical as well as decorative addition to any chilli grower’s harvest.
