Plant description

Cherry Pepper, also known as Cherry Chilli or Pimento-type pepper, is a classic Capsicum annuum variety grown for its distinctive round shape, vibrant colour, and excellent culinary versatility. Widely used across Mediterranean and European cuisines, particularly in Italy, it has long been valued for pickling, stuffing, and preserving. Unlike many modern hybrid chillies, Cherry Pepper is a traditional, well-established variety that has remained popular due to its reliability and broad appeal in the kitchen.

The plant is compact and productive, typically reaching around 2–3 feet tall, with a neat, bushy habit that makes it ideal for pots, raised beds, or greenhouse growing. It produces heavy crops of small, round, glossy fruits—resembling large cherries—ripening from green to a bright, rich red. The flesh is relatively thick and crisp, making it particularly well suited to stuffing and pickling. The flavour is bright, slightly sweet, and gently tangy, offering a pleasant warmth without overpowering dishes, which makes it one of the most versatile chillies for everyday use.

Heat level

3/10: Heat levels are generally mild to moderate (around 2,500–5,000 SHU), though some strains can be sweeter and milder.

Growing instructions

Start Cherry Pepper early by sowing seeds indoors from January, using warmth and strong light to establish sturdy seedlings. Pot on gradually into a nutrient-rich, free-draining compost, ideally mixed with perlite to support healthy root development. Once established in the final pot, begin feeding with a tomato fertiliser after around two weeks and continue regularly throughout the growing season. A minimum 15-litre pot is recommended, though larger pots (20 litres or more) will encourage bigger plants and heavier yields. The plants are naturally compact but can become heavily laden with fruit, so provide light support using canes or small cages to prevent branches from bending or snapping. Grow in a warm, sunny, sheltered position—greenhouse, polytunnel, or a bright outdoor spot—water consistently without overwatering, and maintain good airflow to keep plants healthy and productive.

Preserving & Recipe Ideas

Cherry Peppers are exceptionally well suited to preserving, with pickling being the standout method—whether whole, halved, or stuffed, they retain their texture and develop a wonderful tangy flavour. They can also be frozen (whole or chopped), dried for flakes or powder, or blended into pastes and relishes. Their thick flesh makes them ideal for preserving in oil after roasting (following safe preparation methods), and they can also be fermented into mild, flavourful sauces. In the kitchen, Cherry Peppers truly shine: perfect for stuffing with cheese, meats, or grains, serving as part of antipasti, or adding to salads, pizzas, and sandwiches. They are also excellent roasted or sautéed, bringing a sweet, slightly tangy warmth to dishes. Their moderate heat and rich flavour make them incredibly versatile, offering plenty of character without overwhelming the palate.
