Cherry Baby – Solanum

Plant description
Cherry Baby is a classic cherry tomato variety, prized for its heavy trusses of small, sweet, glossy red fruits and reliable performance. While not tied to a single historic region in the way some heritage tomatoes are, it represents the best of traditional cherry breeding—selected for flavour, productivity, and ease of growing. It is a popular choice among home growers and market producers alike, thanks to its ability to consistently deliver large volumes of high-quality fruit over a long season.
The plant is a vigorous indeterminate (cordon) variety, meaning it will continue to grow and produce throughout the season when properly maintained. Under greenhouse or polytunnel conditions, plants can reach 6–8 feet or more, producing long trusses of small, round tomatoes that ripen from green to a bright, vibrant red. Each truss can carry a generous number of fruits, making Cherry Baby a high-yielding and dependable cropper. The flavour is what truly stands out—sweet, juicy, and well-balanced, with that classic “tomatoey” taste that makes cherry tomatoes so moreish. It’s an excellent variety for snacking straight from the vine as well as for a wide range of culinary uses.
Heat level
0/0: No heat. It’s a tomato. 🙂
Growing instructions
Start Cherry Baby early by sowing seeds indoors from January to March, using warmth and strong light to produce sturdy, healthy seedlings. Pot on gradually into a nutrient-rich, free-draining compost, with perlite added if possible to improve aeration and root development. As an indeterminate variety, it is best grown as a cordon (single stem), removing side shoots regularly to encourage strong truss development and fruiting. Once the plant is established and the first trusses have set, begin feeding with a tomato fertiliser and continue regularly throughout the growing season. Grow in a large pot (minimum 15–20 litres) or in the ground, and provide vertical support using canes or strings, tying the plant in as it grows. Keep in a warm, sunny, sheltered environment such as a greenhouse or polytunnel, water consistently to avoid splitting, and maintain good airflow to promote healthy growth and maximise yields.
Recipes
Cherry Baby tomatoes are incredibly versatile and lend themselves well to both fresh use and preserving. They can be frozen whole for later use in cooking, or slow-roasted to intensify their sweetness before freezing or storing. One of the best methods is making tomato confit—gently cooking the fruits in oil with herbs—which can be refrigerated for short-term use or frozen in portions. They can also be cooked down into sauces, though their natural sweetness really shines when used fresh. In the kitchen, Cherry Baby is perfect for snacking straight from the vine, tossing into salads, or adding to pasta dishes, pizzas, and roasted vegetable trays. Their sweetness pairs beautifully with garlic, basil, and olive oil, and they burst with flavour when lightly cooked, making them a staple ingredient for both simple everyday meals and more refined dishes.
