Plant description

Cheyenne chilli is a modern Capsicum annuum variety bred specifically for compact growth, high productivity, and ornamental appeal, making it ideal for patio containers and small growing spaces. It has become a popular choice among home growers thanks to its reliable performance and vibrant fruit display, combining the best traits of decorative and culinary chillies.

The plant forms a neat, bushy habit, typically reaching around 1–2 feet tall, perfect for pots, window boxes, or greenhouse benches. It produces large numbers of slender, upright pods that ripen through a striking sequence of colours—from pale yellow through orange to deep red—often all visible on the plant at once. Despite its ornamental look, Cheyenne delivers a useful level of heat, generally in the moderate range (around 20,000–50,000 SHU), with a clean, slightly sweet heat that works well in everyday cooking. The plants are prolific, often becoming covered in fruit and continuing to produce over a long season.

Growing instructions

Start Cheyenne early by sowing seeds indoors from January, using warmth and strong light to establish compact, healthy seedlings. Pot on gradually into a nutrient-rich, free-draining compost, ideally improved with perlite to support root development. Begin feeding with a tomato fertiliser about two weeks after potting into the final container and continue regularly throughout the growing season. A 10–15 litre pot is ideal for this compact variety, though larger pots will encourage greater growth and heavier yields. Position in a warm, sunny, sheltered spot—perfect for patios, balconies, or greenhouses. Plants are naturally sturdy but may benefit from light support if heavily laden with fruit. Water consistently without overwatering, and maintain good airflow to keep plants healthy and productive.

Preserving & Recipe Ideas

Cheyenne chillies are easy to preserve thanks to their size and thin walls. Drying is one of the best methods—use a dehydrator or air fryer on dehydrate mode to produce flakes or powder with a clean, medium heat. They can also be frozen whole or chopped, or pickled to retain their colour and add a bright, tangy flavour. Fermenting into chilli pastes or sauces is another excellent option. In the kitchen, Cheyenne is extremely versatile—ideal for stir-fries, sauces, soups, and everyday cooking, where a moderate, approachable heat is desired. Their small size makes them quick to prepare, and their vibrant colours also make them a great addition to dishes where both flavour and presentation matter.
