Zimbabwe Black – Capsicum annuum
Plant description

Zimbabwe Black is a stunning and unusual Capsicum annuum variety, prized as much for its ornamental beauty as for its culinary use. Believed to have origins in Africa, it has become popular worldwide for its dramatic appearance—deep purple to almost black foliage paired with vividly coloured fruits. While its exact breeding history is less formally documented than commercial hybrids, it is widely recognised as a stable heirloom-type variety that brings both visual impact and reliable performance to growers.
The plant is compact and bushy, typically reaching around 2–3 feet in height, making it ideal for pots, borders, or декоратив displays. Its standout feature is the dark, almost black leaves, which contrast beautifully with small, upright pods that emerge deep purple or black before ripening through shades of crimson to bright red. The fruits are relatively small but plentiful, and the plant often becomes covered in pods, creating a striking, multi-coloured display. Heat levels are generally mild to moderate (around 5,000–15,000 SHU), with a clean, slightly earthy chilli flavour, making it both decorative and genuinely useful in the kitchen.

Growing instructions

Start Zimbabwe Black early by sowing seeds indoors from January, using warmth and strong light to establish healthy seedlings. Pot on gradually into a nutrient-rich, free-draining compost, ideally mixed with perlite to promote strong root development. Begin feeding with a tomato fertiliser about two weeks after moving into the final pot and continue regularly throughout the growing season. A 10–15 litre pot is usually sufficient due to the plant’s compact nature, though larger pots will encourage greater growth and yield. Position in a warm, sunny, sheltered spot—good light is especially important to develop the rich dark foliage colour. Plants are naturally sturdy but may benefit from light support if heavily laden with fruit. Water consistently without overwatering, and maintain good airflow to keep plants healthy and productive.
Preserving & Recipe Ideas
Zimbabwe Black chillies are easy to preserve due to their size and abundance. They dry particularly well—use a dehydrator or air fryer on dehydrate mode to create flakes or powder with a gentle heat. They can also be frozen whole or chopped for convenience, or pickled to retain their colour and add a tangy bite. Fermenting into chilli pastes or sauces is another excellent option, producing a mild, flavourful condiment. In the kitchen, these chillies are ideal for everyday use, adding a manageable heat to salads, stir-fries, sauces, and garnishes. Their small size makes them perfect for chopping finely or using whole, while their attractive appearance also makes them a great finishing touch for dishes where presentation matters as much as flavour.
