Plant description

Paper Lantern is a striking Capsicum chinense variety, closely related to habanero types, and prized for its intense heat, citrusy flavour, and heavy productivity. Thought to originate from Caribbean habanero lines, it has been selected for its reliable yields and distinctive lantern-shaped pods, making it a favourite among serious chilli growers. While not as globally famous as some superhots, Paper Lantern has built a strong reputation for combining classic chinense flavour with vigorous growth and consistent performance.

The plant is robust and bushy, typically reaching 3–4 feet tall, with a broad canopy capable of supporting large numbers of fruits. It produces wrinkled, lantern-shaped pods that ripen from green to a vibrant orange. The fruits are thin-walled compared to some habaneros but packed with intense heat (often 150,000–300,000 SHU) and a fruity, slightly floral flavour with citrus notes. Given the right conditions, plants can become heavily laden, creating an impressive display while delivering an abundant harvest over a long season.

Heat level

8/10: Scoville rating is approximately 150,000-300,000.

Growing instructions

Start Paper Lantern early by sowing seeds indoors from January, as Capsicum chinense varieties benefit from a long growing season and consistent warmth. Use heat and strong light to establish sturdy seedlings, then pot on gradually into a nutrient-rich, free-draining compost, ideally mixed with perlite to support strong root development. Once established in the final pot, begin feeding with a tomato fertiliser after around two weeks and continue regularly throughout the season. Aim for a minimum 15-litre pot, though 20 litres or more will allow the plant to reach its full potential. These plants can grow large and become heavily laden with fruit, so provide solid support using canes, cages, or string systems. Grow in a warm, sunny, sheltered position—preferably a greenhouse or polytunnel in the UK climate—water consistently without overwatering, and maintain good airflow to keep plants healthy and productive.

Preserving & Recipe Ideas

Paper Lantern chillies are excellent for preserving, particularly through drying using a dehydrator or air fryer on dehydrate mode, which concentrates their heat and flavour for powders and flakes. They can also be frozen whole or chopped for convenience, pickled for a tangy kick, or fermented into vibrant chilli mashes and hot sauces that highlight their fruity, citrus notes. In the kitchen, they shine in Caribbean-style sauces, salsas, marinades, and pepper sauces, pairing especially well with tropical fruits like mango or pineapple. They can also be used sparingly in stews, curries, and BBQ sauces to add depth and heat. Due to their intensity, a little goes a long way, but their complex flavour makes them far more than just heat—they bring a bright, aromatic character to any dish.
